Mellow Expeditions - @george.srb

For this week’s Mellow Expeditions feature we spoke to @george.srb who recently climbed Mount Fansipan, Vietnam. @george.srb describes his expedition as an unforgettable and beautiful experience. Here’s what he had to say…

Climbing Mount Fansipan, often called the "Roof of Indochina," was an adventure of a lifetime! Rising 10,312 feet above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Vietnam and Indochina peninsula. This mighty peak was not only a physical challenge but also a journey through misty trails and magical landscapes. We kicked off our expedition at 6am, setting out on a 30km round trip that tested our stamina and endurance, finishing the hike at 6pm. Our guide, who amusingly wore flip flops throughout the trek, was an embodiment of local grit and humor. The early part of our journey was covered in mist, obscuring much of the breathtaking views we were looking forward to seeing. But reaching the summit was a reward beyond measure, as the mist vanished, revealing stunning views and a sense of profound accomplishment.

At the top, we were greeted not only by panoramic views but also by a great sense of history and culture. The mountain, surrounded by the clouds, holds a significant place in the local identity, believed to be home to spirits and gods. These legends add a mystical layer to the experience, making the journey not just a physical ascent but a spiritual one as well. Admiring the massive Buddha statue and exploring the beautiful temples at the summit offered a rewarding pause amid the physical exhaustion. Our guide also handed out medals to commemorate our achievement, which was a simple yet touching gesture.

Our descent was a revelation. With the sky finally cleared, what was hidden on our climb now unfolded in all its natural beauty. The dense forests and verdant valleys that define this landscape came alive, offering us sights we had missed on our misty morning ascent. The journey down was not only about retracing our steps but exploring every twist and turn with fresh eyes.

Fansipan isn't just a climb, it's an experience that stays with you long after your hiking boots are off. Definitely an unforgettable journey that I'm thrilled to have captured and shared with the world!
